Hack-o-fun…

Midnight was the time. KU CLL lab was the location. When all the creatures living were in their dreams, some handful of avid programmers was still hitting their keyboards in order to create something worthwhile. Something cool they could be proud of! I entered the site for some inspiration and yes, my decision was absolutely correct. I was in KU IT meet 2014 hackathon, the showcase of endless passion and commitment!
First day of IT meet 2014 was about to end with hopes and anticipation. From the official inauguration, there was no looking back. Started with lighting the digital lamp, an awesome journey was about to begin.
Developers’ meets were motivating. Experts on python, PHP and android were sharing their experiences and expertise. Even wrote a piece of codes! 😉 Stalls were filled with creative and innovative stuffs. Surfed whole day!
Later attended the career counseling! Two speakers from different background presented two different perspectives on career success. What they had in common was, urge for creativity and passion. Only when a person is fully dedicated towards the work he does, then can only he achieve success in his career, was the thread that bound them together.
As one famous person said:-
“Answer a simple question looking your own self in the mirror: Were you happy the every moment you lived?”
The question was hovering my head every time I was staring the fountain outside the window. All I was remembering was the packed staircases. Though empty at that moment, the claps and cheers were still echoing though the air. My mind was drifted back to that evening, the musical evening –“Acoustic Evening”. It was the icing on the cake of the day. Perfect congregation of music and technology. In other words, it was showcase how combination of mind and heart can create that impact which has the everlasting potential.
The darkness was eluded by the flashlight. So was the melancholy of heart fading by the deepness of sentiments. The emotion evoking performances were giving that calmness and composure that anything in the world could provide. With the sun setting over the horizon, birds flying to their shelter, the overall aura and freshness were exhilarating! It was totally resonating the melody and rhythm of music to create that unfathomable psychological effect.
Well, reminiscing back the event was successful . Personally, #Itmeet2014 gave birth to writer within me 😉 Therefore, if anyone asks me the aforementioned question, I have an answer to it. YES, I enjoyed the moment. I lived it. I enjoyed IT meet 2014! 😀
This much for this year. See you back on 2015!
Keep calm and wait for ITmeet2015, we’ll be back online then…

Chord vibrates…There is a sound…We learned..learned a way to talk!

“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”

-Michelangelo

Lately, I have found myself playing with words. Delving into its meaning and slotting them in right places is all I do now-a-days. Imagine a word, tool them to express my emotion and sentiment and repeat it till an article is completed. This is the loop I’ve been carrying out in my head. Nevertheless, this imagination has taken me into untravelled realms and I am able to carve my ‘Sistine Chapel’ in my head.(sometimes buttering yourself is prolly for good!)

We, humans find the solace when we are able to express and communicate our ideas to other people. Making others realize visions we are having is the best thing we can do. I wonder, what were humans like before they were able to communicate through voices?

Fortunately, I didn’t have to go far for the answer. My conscience whispered the same word again: Imagination! Imagination, found the ways for expression when people learned to talk. Maybe same was the case before they were able to talk. Probably, they had some other primitive, be it, ways of expression. Albert Einstein was correct when he said:

“Logic will get you from A to Z. Imagination will take you everywhere!”

Imagination took the pre-historical primitive beings from the state of dumbness to loudness. They were able to talk and they were finally able to convey their feelings.

Enough of the abstraction says my head. So, let it be made clear, IT meet is organizing ‘Talk Show’ on the theme Technology|Opportunity|Entrepreneurship. Various personalities are sharing their thoughts and ideas. In other words, the most evolved ‘learners of talking’ will be  there to inspire you to imagine. They are will be present to motivate you to believe in your heart and take a leap through the mind.

On December 22nd, this Monday, CV Raman Auditorium is going to be a junction for creativity and technology for waking up a entrepreneur in you!

Be there and be a part of evolution. Who knows after the successful grasp acquiring of talking skill, you may imagine some other ways of revolutinizing the human history.

So DONT KEEP CALM, its high time you attend the show! See you there, ciao. 🙂

Technology goes musical.

For some reason, I found myself this afternoon humming the melody of Gulam Ali’s Gajalu Tee:
“Gajalu tee, thula thula aakha. Tira bani base yo dilai ma.”
What triggered my humming was a profile picture of a beautiful friend of mine. But you’ve probably had that too, haven’t you – times when you start humming for no reason? Amazing how all those melodies are bubbling in our subconscious all along, waiting to pop out and remind us of the beauty of music.

I listened to much more music than I realized when I grew up. The radio and TV that always played Narayan Gopal’s:
“Yo samjhine mann cha, ma birsu kasori…”
The song made you wonder if such an old man could still be so passionate about love, there must be something in love that is much more than we can comprehend! Music was everywhere – temples, shops, buses, even your neighbor who never stopped playing:
“Dheere dheere se mere jindagi me aanaa, dheere dheere se dil ko churana.
Tumse pyaar humhe he kitna jaana-ye-jaana, tumse milkar tum ko hain batana.”
Looking at how many love songs we Nepalis listen to, I’m surprised we have so few romantics following princesses-of-their hearts with Ashiqui-style hairdos and flinging red scarves and roses in their hands.

Sadly enough, I never got a chance to expand my musical repertoire beyond Hindi love ballads and Nepali folk songs until I had a cell phone in college. Shame on me for illegally copying music from others, violating copyrights – I know, I know. But as much as I believe in copyright laws, Bluetooth was my only door to the world of music with my empty pocket of a college student. With my new-found musical freedom, I started listening to all sorts of music. From Bob Dylan to Norah Jones and Algerian Khaled to Cuban Buena Vista Social Club – I tried anything and everything. Bocelli seduced me with his love ballads, Bob Marley stirred my conscience, Prodigy let me vent all my frustrations, and Gypsy Kings’s passion for life gave me more reason to live.

Simon and Garfunkel’s The Sound of Silence reminded me that songs don’t only have to be about romantic love:
“When you´re weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes, I’ll dry them all…
I´m on your side, oh, when times get rough
And friends just can´t be found
Like a bridge over troubled water; I will lay me down.”
Kishore Kumar wants us to believe that music is all about love and its frustrations. But music is also about friendships, the comedies and tragedies of our lives and the world we live in. It is about how we face the beauty and sadness of life; it is our close companion in life. Perhaps Bob Dylan best put it:
“Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I’m not sleepy and there is no place I’m going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I’ll come followin’ you.”
Hey, I’m humming again!

P.S: IT MEET 2014 is organizing a Fountain Side Musical Night. Be prepared to be taken off your heels.

Behind the curtain…Before the showdown begins.

“Bhai haru le Harry Potter ra John Lennon ko example deko wala last blog ramro lagyo.” The appreciations and suggestions from friends and seniors were pouring down. They were adamant to an idea  that we must give continuity to this blog. Unlike the gloomy weather of midday, my mind was dancing with euphoric pride. Writing used to once be my passion, however after long hiatus of several years, I was on a run of scribbling my pen consecutively for several days. The feeling was scintillating!

As appreciations were inspiring me, IT meet fever had plagued Kathmandu University DOCSE all over, which had motivated students to involve in organizing this huge event by themselves.  They were rushing in time and space dimensions(Sorry Einstein, not a physics geek, just a romanticist!) . With personal commitment in full gear, they were all passionate about making this IT meet 2014 a grand success.  Some were busy designing website and promotional materials while other searching sponsers for funding the event, on full fledge. The scene of the KUDOCSE Dell lab was motivating!
A room full of tech-enthusiasts was singing a song: Technology|Opportunity|Entrepreneurship. Moved by the rhythm and depth of lyrics, I couldnt help myself from interacting and putting down my queries to the organizing committee members. The line of hardworking ants, all set for a mission was what the scene was reminding me of!

“The people who are crazy

enoughto think they can change

the worldare the ones who do.”

As Steve Jobs once said, this organizers were giving this “crazy” vibes to me. Dheer Uprety, IT meet 2014 event manager, jokingly said,”Ambition led us to organize this big event. Little did we know we would be stumble to this huge mess?” However, his ability to  create synergy between different events was evident through sense of satisfaction relflected by  his confidence guided demeanour. He was hopeful that the holy trinity theme of this event shall place IT meet 2014 within the heights of last year’s event. With the haste in motion, Dinesh Bhandari, event leader at Software competition, was all happy to explain all the technicalities in judging and how the team was allocated and the winner would be selected.

Every story has a Jobs and a wozniack. The front-end managerial skills linked with back-end technical wizardy can only fuel an important leap. All geared up for testing their chromatic instincts and skills, the joint companionship of Nijel Shrestha and Sajesh Khadgi were handling all the graphics design of  promotional materials and websites, not to leave the graphics of the theme and logo. They mentioned how their predecessors in IT meet 2013 inspired them to take a lead by themselves. This event is indeed an opportunity for awekaning a leader hidden within their own self!
The Dell lab was not different from a backstage of a much awaited play. Shakespeare were busy writing whereas some were busy finding scorsese in them. (Anachronistic analogy, but you get the point right?) Within that assembly of event managers, were beautiful ladies making their own mark. Jyoti Manandhar, a leader from operational team dicussed how IT meet provided platform for interaction among her colleagues. She will be responsible for acting bridge between event manager and different event leaders for this event. Similar was the viewpoint of Ms. Sneha Neupane, who is event leader at IT quiz herself. She states humans must constantly strive for improvement, so IT meet provides that exposure for creating that change within themselves through nurturing leadership and social adaptive skills.

Department was happy itself for the demonstration of hardwork and dedication from its students. Mr. Sushil Nepal, assistant professor of DoCSE was happy to see how his students were able to show their skills outside of academia. Without being economical with words, he gave valuable suggestion of how realizing the reality and keeping it par with the ambition is very much important for conducting a grand event as such. Furthermore, he highlighted the idea that IT meet must be developed as a joint heritage of whole Kathmandu University, not just that of DOCSE.

This hardworking ladies and gentlemen are ready to print their mark on history as change inducers. What are you waiting for? Just be a part of IT meet 2014 and see technology unfolding, the untold realms, in front of your eyes!

Chanting the change this 21st and 22nd all over with epicentre- Kathmandu University…

“IT MEET” का सम्भावनाहरु

Defining the Trinity Behind IT MEET 2014.

In the brilliantly written Harry Potter series, the magnanimous wizards use the spell Alohomora to make their way through locked doors. The spell summons magical powers that has the ability to fathom heavily guarded realms.

Thinking with an abstract mind, we can think of technology as such spell that has alluring charm which can and has open undreamt of possibilities. Entrepreneurs are the modern day Dumbledore using Technology as their elder wand to create Opportunities to the muggle world.

The word technology literally means “the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry”.

Anything that can bring change or modify the way we think or perceive things is Technology. From the nib of a pen to the zipper of a pant, as Rancho from the ingenious 3 idiots movie explains, is a machine which in turn is technology.  Your grandparents may recall need of buying vinyl records to listen to Narayan Gopal sing. This may bring nostalgia to them but your indifference towards those records even today explains the change, or in other words technology. Nowadays, you don’t listen to vinyl, you listen to mp3 in mobile devices. This sound compression format, mp3 is a technology which has revolutionized the way people listen to music.  This is what technology is capable of. To turn the wheels of time into a more radical era.

The need for change and the innate ability to analyze and communicate have always provided innovators and romanticists a way to think. They think, they stumble upon ground-breaking ideas, they search for opportunities to implement them and then bring a wave of change. Hence, our want for evolution, our yearning for a simpler life has always been the source for our unprecedented  power of imagination. And this has guided persons throughout history, from Da Vinci of a barbaric era, Henry Ford of a War-torn era to Steve Jobs in the post-modern world, each of them had the sense of intuition, imagination and the courage to pursue their dreams for greater good. They are not just businessmen- they are dreamers, innovators, romanticists, the torch bearers of our evolution.

La la thik cha, we will cut the crap and come to the point.

This blog post should have shed some light on the grotesque apprenticeship between entrepreneurs(the wizards), technology(the wand) and opportunities(the magic).

KU IT MEET 2014 aims to provide a platform for future entrepreneurs to share their ideas in technology with fellow dreamers . It is an attempt to help them realize the potentials and limitations of their ideas thus revolutionizing our approach to unleash the power of technology.

The idea might be overwhelming at first, but when many people with same dream come together, nothing is impossible and as metaphysics teaches us that thought has mass, with commutative thoughts and action, we can bring change.

IT meet 2014 is trinity of Technology, Opportunity and Entrepreneurship.  You dream, interact and you create something worthwhile.

Be the part of IT Meet 2014, be that carrier of change.

As John Lennon dai used to say, don’t afraid to be a dreamer because you are not the only one! 😛

P.S: To all readers who are not familiar with The Harry Potter Universe, we are sorry re kya.

P.P.S: Also, to you muggles(non wizards) READ THEM HARRY POTTER BOOKS.

Making of IT MEET 2014 Logo

The prelude of “Keep Talking” starts with a monologue from Stephen Hawking:

For thousands of years mankind lived just like animals

Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination

We learned to talk

We have always fantasized about the vast realms of our imagination. The more vibrant an awe is towards the capacity of human brain to capture the ongoing process involved in the genesis of the idea.

The design of the logo for IT MEET 2014 was a tedious process which involved a sinusoidal series of brainstorming and lots of monologue in between. Since a logo is the symbolical embodiment of an idea and the idea was to involve technology, entrepreneurship, opportunity as a circular process, the foreplay mostly involved merging these processes together.

We believe that any creative process requires co-operation, the simulated clash of personalities from different shades of life. This paved the way towards an initial design.

IT MEET Initial LogoWe tried to depict the mutual existence of professionals and students from different field who work together towards a common goal. The process involved is a circular process, much like the symbiotic relationship where two parties help each other for mutual benefit.

sketch

The next step was to illustrate the existence of different field which required use of different colors. We experimented different styles that would ultimately bring some life to the logo.

Finally, there is a winner among the crowd that would hold true our philosophy behind this creative process, the hands of people from different background coming together on one stage to create something marvelous. The color yellow represents optimism. Green is the color of confidence and growth. Light blue represents strength and trust.
